Victor Osimhen’s Header Cancelled by Late Zimbabwe Equaliser
A thrilling night of football in Uyo saw Nigeria share points with Zimbabwe in a 1-1 World Cup qualifier. Victor Osimhen’s powerful header had put the Super Eagles ahead, only for Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa to snatch a late equaliser and silence the home crowd at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The first half was a cagey affair with both teams probing but unable to break through. Osimhen forced two early saves from George Arubi, while Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze provided glimpses of danger. Zimbabwe, however, defended with grit, ensuring the scoreline remained goalless at the break.
Nigeria finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. After some fine hold-up play by Tolu Arokodare, Ola Aina whipped in a perfect cross for Osimhen to nod home past Arubi. The crowd erupted in relief as the Super Eagles seemed set for victory.
Yet, the hosts missed opportunities to seal the win. Knowledge Musona nearly equalised in the 76th minute when his shot ricocheted off the underside of the bar. Wilfred Ndidi also squandered a golden chance, misfiring when Moses Simon set him up with acres of space.
As the clock wound down, Zimbabwe kept pressing. In the 90th minute, Chirewa showed composure in the Nigerian box and slid the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to earn a deserved point. The visiting fans celebrated wildly, while Nigerian supporters were left in disbelief.
Nigeria’s inability to finish chances and see out games remains a concern. For Zimbabwe, their resilience was rewarded, and this draw will bolster their confidence in the qualifying campaign.

We cannot ignore the frustration that follows yet another missed opportunity by the Super Eagles. Time and again, we witness promising performances undone by lapses in concentration and wastefulness in front of goal.
